Testicular Examination

A testicular examination performed by a healthcare professional is a more comprehensive assessment of the testicles and surrounding structures. Here’s what you can expect during a testicular examination by a doctor:

Introduction and discussion

The doctor will explain the procedure and ensure your comfort and privacy. They may ask questions about your medical history, any symptoms you may be experiencing and if you have noticed any changes in your testicles.

Positioning

You will likely be asked to undress from the waist down and lie down on an examination table. A sheet or gown may be provided for modesty.

Visual examination

The doctor will visually inspect the scrotum and surrounding area for any signs of swelling, skin changes or abnormalities.

Manual examination

Using gloved hands, the doctor will gently feel each testicle and the structures surrounding them. They will evaluate the size, shape, consistency and any tenderness or nodules present. They may use their fingers to roll and palpate the testicles to detect any irregularities.

Examination of the epididymis

The doctor will check the epididymis, a coiled structure located behind the testicle, for any swelling, tenderness or abnormalities.

Examination of the spermatic cord

The doctor may feel and assess the spermatic cord, which is the cord-like structure connecting the testicle to the body. They will check for any abnormalities or signs of inflammation.

Additional tests or investigations

Depending on the findings and your specific situation, the doctor may recommend additional tests, such as a scrotal ultrasound or blood tests, to further evaluate any abnormalities or concerns.

Discussion and recommendations

After the examination, the doctor will discuss their findings with you, provide explanations and answer any questions you may have. They may recommend further evaluation, additional tests, or refer you to a specialist if necessary.

It’s important to communicate openly with your doctor and provide any relevant information about your symptoms or concerns. They are there to assess your testicles, address any questions or worries you may have and provide appropriate guidance or treatment based on their findings.

Regular testicular examinations by a healthcare professional are particularly important if you notice any changes, such as lumps, swelling, pain or other abnormalities in your testicles. Early detection of testicular conditions, including testicular cancer, can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
